How we teach young people the skills of fire lighting in a safe, structured and confidence-building way.
RISK ASSESMENT
1/6/20241 min read
Fire lighting is a timeless Scout skill. It sparks curiosity, independence and respect for nature. Our Fire Lighting Risk Assessment makes sure that while young people learn these skills, safety is always the top priority.
We cover areas such as:
Handling wood and tools — preventing splinters, cuts and misuse
Behaviour and supervision — setting expectations, keeping group sizes small and closely monitored
Burns prevention — safe distances, clear fire areas, tucked-in clothing and tied-back hair
Fire control — safe fire pits, water buckets nearby, avoiding dangerous materials
First aid — treatment sheets and kits on hand for burns or injuries
By balancing adventure with responsibility, young people gain confidence and skills while leaders ensure every fire lighting session is safe.
