When "close enough" just won't cut it for some Scouts — Joe's already planning round two

Seventeen Scouts, a handful of smartphones, and one geocache that absolutely, categorically refused to be found. That was Tuesday night's geocaching adventure along Otterspool Prom — and honestly, it was brilliant.

The troop met at Otterspool Adventure Cafe before setting off on a treasure hunt that had everything: easy wins that built confidence, head-scratchers that required teamwork, and one elusive little box that has haunted Joe's dreams ever since. Some caches practically jumped out at the Scouts. Others required forensic-level searching, poking sticks into hedges, and whispered tactical discussions. And then there was that one — the Moby Dick of geocaches, the white whale of Otterspool Prom.

Joe's going back this weekend. Alone. With a compass, a map, and what can only be described as unfinished business.

Huge thanks to leaders Joe, Ruth and Sandra for running the evening, and to the wonderful parents who joined the hunt and helped keep Scouts on task (no small feat when there's always an ice cream van within sniffing distance or a really important and essential stick). Geocaching is one of those brilliant Scouting activities that looks simple — find the box, sign the log — but teaches navigation, problem-solving, perseverance and the fine art of not giving up when technology says you're standing right on top of it but there's definitely nothing there.

The Scouts earned serious #SkillsForLife points, got fresh air, explored their local area, and learned that sometimes the most satisfying finds are the ones that make you work for it. Or in Joe's case, the ones that require a second expedition.

Good luck this weekend, Joe. We believe in you. (He's got no chance)
