Twenty-five Cubs cooked their way through campfire classics — dampers, s'mores and the legendary choc banana

When you've got fire, food and 25 Cubs with matches, you know it's going to be a good night.
Monday evening at Kettlenook saw our pack transform into backwoods chefs — and honestly, the menu was outstanding. Campfire bread (aka dampers), hot dogs sizzling over flames, choc bananas wrapped in foil, and of course the eternal Scout favourite: s'mores. "Best meal ever!" declared one very satisfied customer, marshmallow still stuck to their chin.
Fire lighting came first — the all-important skill that separates a camper from someone just standing in a field holding a stick. Once the flames were crackling, the cooking began. Special shout-out to Liz, who absolutely smashed the damper-making and became the unofficial bread whisperer of the evening. Dough + stick + patience = triumph.
And then there was Akela. The zombie dance. We're still not entirely sure what prompted it, but it happened, and it will be remembered.
Twenty-five Cubs walked away with their Backwoods Cooking blanket badges firmly earned — and probably a few leftover marshmallows in their pockets. #SkillsForLife? Absolutely. #SkillsForSnacks? Even better.
Big thanks to all the leaders who made it happen, and especially to Liz for keeping the damper dream alive.
**Up next:** Wingdings camp is on the horizon — more outdoor adventures, more cooking, more memories made under canvas. Watch this space.
