“Wombling Free in Cressington!” — Local Kids Spark Litter-Picking Revolution Across South Liverpool

LIVERPOOL, 22 July 2025 — What began as a simple badge project by a group of enthusiastic Beaver Scouts has grown into a thriving, community-wide clean-up campaign that’s inspiring neighbourhoods across South Liverpool.

Back in autumn 2023, local Beavers working towards their Community Impact Badge identified litter in their area as a major concern. Realising the challenge was too big for young Scouts alone, they reached out to local councillors Lynnie Williams and Sam Gorst for support. With matched funding from the Scouts, the Cressington Wombles were born.

Since their official launch in October 2023, the Wombles have become a shining example of grassroots action. Meeting on the first Saturday of every month at the local Scout hut, the group — made up of children, families, councillors and residents of all ages — has grown to 75 members on the mailing list, and continues to expand.

“We started with a few Beavers and a couple of litter pickers,” said Jane Leadbetter, Scout Leader. “Now, we're welcoming new families to the Scout hut every month — and even helping others start Womble groups of their own!”

With continued support from Councillor Richard Clein, who provides extra equipment through neighbourhood funds, the Wombles have delivered a huge environmental impact.

Since they began logging their litter totals in January 2023, the group has collected:

  • 522 bags of litter in 2023

  • 633 bags in 2024

  • 485 bags already in 2025 (as of July) — on track to beat all previous years

That’s over 1,600 bags of litter cleared from local streets, parks and green spaces — and counting! Many Wombles litter-pick between meetups, with equipment available to borrow. Every bag is proudly added to the running tally at the Scout hut.

The group is now registered with Keep Britain Tidy, and works closely with Liverpool Streetscene Services, who collect the filled bags after each event.

“It’s not just about cleaning up,” added Jane. “It’s about community spirit, making new friends, and taking real pride in where we live.”
